We’re nearing the end of John Carpenter week within #Johnuary and today we’re looking at In The Mouth of Madness. And what an interesting movie this is.
- The opening track sounds a lot like Metallica. I’m not totally sure if it was Carpenter or not actually
- I only really know Sam Neill from Jurassic Park and I think of this film being made before Jurassic Park but actually it was after it which surprised me
- The butler guy from Titanic is in this film! Don’t think I’ve ever seen him in anything else
- I didn’t particularly like the score on this one. Probably the first film, of Carpenter’s, that I didn’t like the score of. It was done jointly by Carpenter and Jim Lang
- I really like the premise of the film. It’s a very cool concept
- I do quite like Sam Neill but I really don’t think he pulls off the cocky, womanising type at all, I’m afraid
- Great seeing Charlton Heston in modern films like this. He always lends a certain gravitas to films
- The film does seem a little clumsy in places, which you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a film like this made in the mid 90s. It’s a shame because I do like the plot
- I made a note whilst watching the film that I loved the bit on the sofa, but I really can’t remember right now which bit that was! I think there was a really scary/funny jump scare near the end
- The guy cycling on the bike, and getting older was good. I really liked that. That’s the sort of thing I find quite scary
- Some of Carpenter’s trademark wide landscape shots feel slightly forced here, but some shots, like the fast focus pull on the axe when they arrive in Hobb’s End are great
- I love how he’s a skeptic and thinks it’s all a hoax for a lot of the movie
- Everyone in movies knows how to hotwire cars. Everyone
- I felt that Sam Neill fell into madness a bit too quickly at the end after being such a skeptic the whole time
I felt the movie didn’t start to well, I think mostly probably because of some of the acting and also a couple of clumsy moments, but actually as the movie went on I really liked it. I loved the ending. I don’t think it will get too high in my ranking list but it’s certainly well worth a watch.
