The next John Hughes film I watched for #Johnuary was Miracle on 34th Street. We were watching this anyway for Christmas and as John Hughes wrote the screenplay and produced it I thought I should write a quick post for Johnuary on it.

To be honest though, it didn’t really feel very John Hughesy. He didn’t direct it and it was a remake so perhaps it was hard for him to make his mark on it in a big way. I do really enjoy this film but I don’t feel as strong a connection to the actors as I normally do in a John Hughes film. I just felt a bit distant to the main three characters. For some reason the film also seemed a lot older than it is, to me. It almost feels like it’s a 70s film or something. Or an old black and white film that’s been coloured or something. I’m not sure what it is that makes me feel that way. Maybe the kid’s jacket, or the mum’s haircut. Or the film stock used. I really don’t know.

Richard Attenborough is brilliant in it though and it’s a great Christmas spirit film for sure.

And it stars Arthur Dent from the original Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy!
