Makeup is an evergreen fashion phenomenon that has done an excellent job in evolving whilst moving with the trends. While 1980s fashion had a lot to do with jewelry, clothing and hairstyles, you cannot ignore the presence of makeup in the 80s; it showed up too much to go unmentioned.
Features of makeup in the 80s
The first feature of makeup in the 80s, was its lavish use of colors; let us term this as the playful style of the 80s. Makeup in the 80s was all about adventurously using a blend of colors, from sharp pink, purple, red and blue eyeshadow to the use of beautifully colored mascaras. The makeup in the 80s always showed up in heavily colored forms proving that multiple colors does not depreciate the beauty of art. You will need to embrace more colors if you want the style of the 80s.
Now we will take a look at eyebrows. Brows were never to be caught scanty and bland in the style of the 80s. Brows were bold and bushy thereby giving a daring and ‘ready for action’ look. So if you are looking to recreate the makeup in the 80s, give some more weight to those brows.
Now, what is a 1980s vintage look without the rocker eye and pink lip look? Absolutely nothing! The rocker eye and pink lip combo was a major trend of makeup in the 80s. it was a combination of the fierce look in the eyes and the mildly romantic look of the lips; if you want to get the look of makeup in the 80s, you need to find your way around this particular look.
One swift way to create trendy makeup is to look for artists who wore this makeup excellently well such as; Madonna, Grace Jones, Princess Diana, Cyndi Lauper, Molly Ringwald, Olivia Newton-John, Jane Fonda, Brooke Shields, Debbie Harry, Christie Brinkley and many others. These are a very good source of inspiration for makeup of the 80s.
Blush was a major highlight of the makeup in the 80s too. Your cheeks had to be full of color. It was often bright pink and was concentrated on the cheekbones. There was no style of the 80s that could leave out the use of blush. If you want to create a vintage style of the 80s, then you will certainly need a lot of blush.
The style of the 80s is not complete without the heavy foundation which was applied and the thick colored eyeliners as well, that went from the base to the top.
Creativity, style, audacity and color were the major themes of the fashion and style of the 80s. It was obviously different from previous years and fearlessly so too. These tips should come in handy for your next shot at recreating style of the 80s.
Tips for creating trendy makeup in the 80s
- Be sure to start with a clean face. This helps to give the face a smooth surface to work on. Even if you have oily skin, applying moisturizer will help to lessen it.
- Apply primer, foundation, and powder. Primer is not compulsory, but it works to fill in any pores and wrinkles, and also makes the makeup come out smoother. If you have oily skin, use a powder-based foundation, but for dry skin, try a liquid or cream-based foundation.
- Contour your face, it works for a perfect punk or gothic look. When you contour your face, you should choose a foundation that is 2-3 shades darker than your normal skin tone, apply it to the sides of your nose, your temples, and the hollows of your cheeks. You can also use a heavy blush in the hollows of your cheek and in front of your ears.
- Use a bright eyeshadow and make it the focus of your look. Use a medium-shade over your eyelid, and a lighter shade over your eyebrow. Then complete it with a darker color. Bright colors like red, blue, purple, or hot pink, will help to bring out the real 80s look. You can also use a eyeshadow primer first to make the bright colors stand out even more.
- You can use a simple eyeliner or a gothic one. You can use different colors for your eyeliner too; it doesn’t always have to be black. You can go for colors like blue or teal, especially on the lower lash line.
- Add mascara to balance your eyeliner and eyeshadow. The 80s look is majorly about the eyes, so you will have to wear a lot of eyeliner and eyeshadow. A good mascara helps to balance your look and open up your eyes. Keep your eyebrows bushy, but well kempt. Pluck out any stray hairs and comb through your brows with a brow brush.
- Use a bright color lipstick that matches your eyeshadow color. You can try using different colors until you get it right for you.
- Set your makeup with powder

In the 1980s there was a young lady at work, real name Sandra but referred to as “Warpaint” behind here back who thought this advert was a lesson on how to apply makeup ready for a day at work :-)

I have always been a huge fan of the vintage makeup look, as the glamour and style appeals to me. A lot of my clients, surprisingly even the younger generation are getting glamour and vintage makeup done for the high school formals. Being a professional makeup artist is the best job.
