Ephemera
ephemera ɪˈfɛm(ə)rə,-ˈfiːm-/
noun (plural noun: ephemera)
1. things that exist or are used for only a short time
e.g. “there were old boxes, leaflets, posters, card art — all sorts of ephemera”
2. collectable items that were originally expected to have only short-term usefulness or popularity
e.g. “Battle Beasts ephemera”
There’s something that I really love about random paper merchandise. In particular leaflets and brochures that came with toys and showed you all the other products in the line. My imagination used to feed off those almost as much as having all the toys themselves. I also love comparing the advertising style from the 80s to today.
And then there is card art, card backs and box art. These were done to spark the imagination of kids and entice them to get the toys, and boy did it work. He-Man, G.I. Joe and Transformers had particularly great packaging art. Check out the pictures of all these things in the gallery below. Keep checking back.
