Name: The Goonies storybook
Country of origin: USA
Storybooks were a great way for children to relive a movie when they couldn’t see it on-demand or on streaming services like you can today. VHS tapes could be expensive to hire, and that is even if you owned a VCR. Storybooks gave you a condensed version of the film, with some great photos too, to let you enjoy the film over and over. The benefit was that, as they had to make these books at the same time that the movie was being made, you sometimes got scenes in the book which didn’t make the final cut of the film. I remember being so confused as a kid wondering how I had missed the convenience store scene in the movie (see the last photo on the right). Only years later have I realised that I didn’t fall asleep and miss the scene but actually it was one of the scenes that must have been deleted too late to be removed from the book.
